Overcoming Self Doubt

You can do anything you set your mind to.

The most cliche and overused statement told to people who doubt themselves. And it is the most true statement that someone who is doubting themselves can hear. I can tell you this for a fact, because I was one of those people who doubted they were capable.

When a colleague left back in the Spring I was offered her position and was immediately sent into a spiral of self doubt and questioning. i called my sister and asked if she thought I could take the role on, and if I was possibly stopping myself from saying yes because I was scared. In the end we decided that it was me stopping myself because I was scared. So I walked back into the meeting and accepted the new responsibility.

The truth is I have never seen myself as a leader, nor the type of person to be able to take control and guide others. However, looking back at the few months prior I realized that I was already in a leadership type role. I was responsible for interns and guiding them through a semester of tasks, giving them feedback and advice.

I was in control of my own future, to say no now when I had already proven myself capable of doing so, would be disservice to myself and my career. So I sat in the fear and anxiety while i figured out what the role was to me and made it entirely my own. I am still figuring it out even months later and adapting to my new title of Associate Director of Marketing and Production. The new title was a scary thing to me. I had always thought of myself as a follower. So being the assistant to the head of marketing was one thing, but being the leader of marketing, especially with my background and education being in graphic design, was a hurdle i never thought of myself as overcoming. And I did. I forced myself through the fear and I got myself into a routine and started figuring out what my new position meant.

For now it means that each day at work I come up with a plan to get the name of SunSpin Media out in the community. I also take charge of editing and laying out Your Health, Wealth, Happiness, & Spirit magazine, which we produce in house.

I am proud of my work and each day learn new ways to improve from colleagues and interns. I cannot wait to see where the future takes us. I look forward to continuing to grow and learn and be the best marketing director I can be, and take SSM to the next level.
